The Most Common Mistakes That Ruin Gel Polish

Gel polish can last up to three weeks — but only when it is applied and maintained correctly. At Zennail Studio, we frequently see the same issues with clients who arrive with damaged gel or bad experiences from other salons. Here are the most common mistakes and how to avoid them.

1. Skipping Nail Prep

Preparation is the foundation. The nail must be clean, dry, and dehydrated before the base coat goes on. Skip this step and the gel lifts within a week.

What we do at Zennail Studio: Every appointment begins with thorough dehydration and gentle cuticle work. We never skip this step.

2. Applying Layers Too Thick

More gel does not mean a better result. Thick layers do not cure properly under a UV/LED lamp, resulting in soft gel that peels and chips.

The rule: Three thin layers always beat one thick one.

3. Forgetting to Cap the Free Edge

The free edge of the nail must be sealed with every layer — base, colour, and top coat. Without this, water and detergents seep between the gel and the nail, causing lifting.

Tip:

Run your brush over the free edge with every layer — this one simple step can extend your gel life by a full week.

4. Using a Poor LED/UV Lamp

A lamp that does not cure properly is the most common cause of peeling and soft gel. Professional lamps have sufficient power and even light distribution.

5. Peeling Off Gel Polish

This is the mistake that causes the most damage. When you peel gel off, you remove the top layers of your natural nail with it. The result: thin, brittle, painful nails that need months to recover.

Proper removal: Lightly file the top layer, soak in acetone for 10–15 minutes, gently push off with a cuticle stick. Never force it.

6. Exposing Nails to Chemicals Without Gloves

Cleaning products, detergents, and disinfectants are aggressive on gel polish. Wear gloves when washing dishes and cleaning — your gel will last significantly longer.

Note:

Simple rubber gloves can extend the life of your gel polish by several days. Small trick, big difference.

7. Too Many Treatments Without a Break

Nails need an occasional rest. We recommend a one to two week break after three to four consecutive gel treatments to let the natural nail recover.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should gel polish last?

Properly applied gel polish lasts 2–3 weeks without lifting or peeling. If it lifts sooner, the issue is most likely in the preparation or application technique.

Is gel polish bad for nails?

Gel polish itself is not harmful — improper application and especially improper removal by peeling is what causes damage. With professional application and removal, nails stay healthy.

How do I spot a good gel polish salon?

Pay attention to nail preparation, tool hygiene, lamp quality, and application speed. A rushed application often means skipped steps.

Do not leave your nail health to chance. Book an appointment at Zennail Studio and feel the difference that a professional approach makes.
